Abstract

The current study aimed to determine the prevalence rate of gifted students in the sixth grade in the Sultanate of Oman. The study also aimed to determine variables predicting academic achievement, gender and obtain prizes. The study sample was 3733 students (1205 males and 2528 females), who participated in the programs to detect talented students (793 students in the Tharwa 1, and 2940 students in the Tharwa 2). The Profile of Creative Abilities (PCA) "Student form" designed by Gail Ryser to acquaint the creative abilities of students in the age group of 5-14 years. The student form consists of two subtests: a- Drawing (measures 4 abilities: new elements, originality, orientation, perspective), and b- Categories (measures 2 abilities: fluency, flexibility). The validity and reliability in the Omani settings was obtained using a team of researchers at Sultan Qaboos University who applied and standardized it on a sample of 982 male and female students in the Sultanate of Oman. The results revealed that the prevalence rate of very superior level (according to the profile classification) 7.7% (3.2% in males, 9.9% in females). Using Stepwise Multiple Regression revealed two variables including achievement in mathematics, and the gender predicted level of student talent. In light of these results, a number of recommendations and suggestions were made.
