Nowadays, Muslims are very particular in choosing foods with halal logo and foods that comply with the Shari’ah law. It is because there are so many food products and restaurants that offer the products without halal logo. These products and restaurants utilize phrases such as, ‘pork free’ or ‘no pork’, which can mislead their Muslim customers. As such, this research was conducted in order to identify the Muslim students’ perception towards halal regulations and the importance of its logo in choosing the food products in UiTM Sarawak. This research adopted a quantitative method by distributing the electronic questionnaires among UiTM Sarawak Muslim students. A total of 955 Muslim students were involved and they were from three UiTM campuses across Sarawak; one campus in Mukah and another two campuses in Samarahan. In addition to that, this research also focused on the Malaysian regulations relating to the halal certification and marking according to the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011. The questionnaires were divided into several sections; questions related to the respondent demography as well as the questions related to the understanding of halal regulations and certification. The result of this research is essential to explore the Muslim students’ perception towards food products with halal logo in UiTM Sarawak and eventually, this effort will increase their awareness and confidence in halal foods.
Abstrak
Pemilihan makanan berlogo halal dan mematuhi syariah adalah sangat dititikberatkan dalam kehidupan seharian setiap muslim. Lebih-lebih lagi terdapat lambakan produk makanan dan restoran yang menawarkan produk makanan yang tidak mempunyai logo halal tetapi memaparkan ‘Pork Free’ atau ‘No Pork’ boleh mengelirukan para pengguna muslim. Oleh itu kajian ini dilakukan bagi mengetahui persepsi pelajar muslim UiTM Cawangan Sarawak terhadap undang-undang halal dan kepentingan logo halal dalam pemilihan produk makanan. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah kuantitatif dengan mengedarkan borang soal selidik secara elektronik dikalangan pelajar muslim di UiTM Cawangan Sarawak. Seramai 955 orang pelajar muslim UiTM Cawangan Sarawak terdiri daripada 3 kampus iaitu UiTM Cawangan Sarawak Kampus Mukah, UiTM Cawangan Sarawak Kampus Samarahan dan UiTM Cawangan Sarawak Kampus Samarahan 2 telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Selain itu, kajian ini juga melihat dari sudut undang-undang di Malaysia mengenai pensijilan dan logo halal menurut Perintah Perihal Dagangan (Perakuan dan Penandaan) Halal 2011. Borang soal selidik dibahagikan kepada beberapa bahagian iaitu soalan berkaitan demografi responden, soalan berkaitan kefahaman undang-undang halal dan soalan berkaitan dengan kefahaman undang-undang logo halal. Hasil keputusan akan menunjukkan tahap kefahaman pelajar muslim terhadap undang-undang halal dan undang-undang halal berkaitan logo halal dalam pemilihan produk makanan. Kajian ini adalah sangat penting untuk menerokai persepsi pelajar muslim UiTM Cawangan Sarawak terhadap produk makanan yang mempunyai logo halal dan seterusnya secara tidak langsung dapat meningkatkan kesedaran dan keyakinan terhadap makanan halal.
