Abstract

Caravanserai is an Islamic architecture that has existed since the reign of Caliph Umar bin al-Khattab and remains to this day. Caravanserai was built as a stopover and resting place for traders in addition to highlighting certain elements of architectural art according to the times. In addition to being a stopover, caravanserai is seen to be able to be a tourist destination that provides the opportunity to explore more closely the history and culture found in it. This study aims to describe the development of caravanserai as a tourism center with a focus on the countries of Iran and Turkey. This qualitative study uses a content analysis study design and a historical study. The information and data in this article were obtained from various reference sources among journal articles, encyclopedias, reference books, dissertations, and theses that are seen as relevant and related to the title of this article. The results of this study show that a caravanserai is a temporary accommodation that has been equipped with various other facilities and suitable to be the main catalyst for the growth of tourism and culture in a region and can promote the uniqueness of the architecture, history, and culture in the area.
