Abstract

The research study examines the influence of e-commerce usage on the growth and competitiveness of the Halal Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) market. It investigates the relationship between e-commerce use and four main factors: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived trust and security, and perceived competitive advantage. The study also explores the potential mediating role of e-commerce usage in the relationship between these factors and the business competitiveness of Halal SMEs. Using a quantitative approach, data was collected through a structured survey questionnaire given to n = 311 owners and managers of Halal SMEs. Statistical techniques, including correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation analysis, were used to analyse the data. These findings reveal several important insights. Perceived usefulness has a positive and significant influence on e-commerce adoption, indicating that Halal SMEs are more likely to adopt e-commerce technology when they see it as beneficial in increasing productivity and efficiency. However, the relationship between perceived ease of use and e-commerce use was found to be non-significant, indicating that user friendliness alone may not drive adoption decisions. Perceived trust and security emerged as important factors driving e-commerce adoption. Halal SMEs also show greater confidence in conducting online transactions and establishing long-term relationships with e-commerce providers. Furthermore, the study highlights the significant impact of perceived competitive advantage on e-commerce adoption. However, the research results show an insignificant direct relationship between the use of e-commerce and the business competitiveness of Halal SMEs. E-commerce use does not act as a mediator in the relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived trust and security, perceived competitive advantage, and business competitiveness. Further research is recommended to explore additional factors, such as the competitiveness of digital marketing strategies, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics between e-commerce adoption and the competitiveness of Halal SMEs.
