PROBLEMS IN TRANSLATING ENGLISH-ARABIC COLLOCATIONS AMONG STUDENTS OF FACULTY OF MAJOR LANGUAGES STUDIES, UNIVERSITI SAINS ISLAM MALAYSIA

The research deals with the translation of English collocations into Arabic. In the field of translation, collocation plays an important role whereby it needs to be taken into serious attention by translators because it needs to be well-defined during translation as this will affect the quality of the translation itself. The methodology used in this research was based on qualitative method; in-depth interview with 15 final year undergraduate students of Faculty of Major Languages Studies, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). This research aims to find the problems facedby the students which include; grammar, lexical, and cultural. The result concludes the main problem faced by the students relates to grammatical problem followed by lexical, cultural and other problems related to their influence on their mother tongue, lack of vocabulary, difficulty in understanding vocabulary, frequency of language practice, literal and mechanism translation. These findings will enhance the quality of translating and interpreting collocations. This study believes that the gap in translating English into Arabic collocation could be bridged in the future and thus motivate further research into other important areas of language teaching and learning.

تتعلق الدراسة الحالية بمشكلات ترجمة المتلازمات اللفظية من الإنجليزية إلى العربية، حيث أن المتلازمات اللفظية لها دورا مهما وهاما لدى المترجمين، إذ ينبغي عليهم الاهتمام بها لكونها تحتاج إلى أعلى جودة من الترجمة. نهجت هذه الدراسة على المنهجين الكيفيى النوعي باستخدام أداة المقابلة. ولقد تم إجراء المقابلة على 15 من طلبة السنة الرابعة من كلية دراسات اللغات الرئيسة بجامعة العلوم الإسلامية الماليزية، بالنظر في مشكلاتهم وكفاءاتهم الترجمية في ترجمة المتلازمات اللفظية. وتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى البحث عن المشكلات التي تواجه الطلبة من الجوانب النحوية، والمعجمية، والثقافية. وتوصلت نتائج الدراسة الحالية إلى أن المشكلة الرئيسية التي يواجهونها هي المشكلة النحوية، تليها المشكلة المعجمية، ثم الثقافية، كما توصلت الدراسة إلى وجود مشكلات أخرى تتعلق بتأثرهم بلغة الأم، وقلة مفرداتهم اللغوية، وصعوبة فهم المفردات، والتردد في ممارسة اللغة، والترجمة الحرفية، والآلية. ولعلّ الدراسة الحالية تفيد ميدان ترجمة المتلازمات اللفظية من الإنجليزية إلى العربية، وتحثّ الطلبة والأكاديميين والجهات المهتمة بالترجمة وتعليم اللغة على الاهتمام بها، وإتقانها.
